Em Gyumri, encontramos um pouco mais de conforto no Hotel Almas. Depois de uma semana sem o contato com o mundo externo, surpreendo-me com uma televisão no saguão do hotel no momento em que passava a novela brasileira “Cabocla”.
At the Almas Hotel in Gyumri, we were a little more comfortable. After a week without contact with the outside world, I was surprised to enter the hotel lobby to find a TV set tuned to a Brazilian soap-opera: “Cabocla”.
Em um rápido reconhecimento pela cidade encontramos um cyber café, que felizmente estava sinalizado com um símbolo compreensível a todos. Na volta ao hotel iniciamos o planejamento de trabalho e estabelecer os contatos locais para pesquisas. Cécile encontra um piano e nos apresenta sua outra faceta.
On a quick city-tour we found a cyber-café marked by a sign with symbols we could all understand. Getting back to the hotel, we began to plan our work and to make local contacts to help us with our research. Cécile located a piano and showed us another facet of her talents.
No dia seguinte, depois do trabalho, fomos convidados para um pouco de turismo nas montanhas e visitar Marmachen, local de laser das famílias nos finais de semana onde há parte de um monastério.
The next day, after our work, we were invited to tour the mountains and to visit Marmachen, a local vacation spot where families go on weekends and where there are the remains of a monastery.

Por mera curiosidade fizemos um passeio longo e difícil para ver ao longe a antiga capital da Armênia, Ani, agora em território turco. O caminho todo estava em obras, pois as estradas foram destruídas pelo terremoto. Chegamos à fronteira que possui quatro km de território neutro entre duas cercas guardadas por exército armado. Depois de muita conversa com os guardiões do local, fomos autorizados a chegar há dois Km da cerca, ponto onde se avista Ani, acompanhados de um deles.
Just out of curiosity, we took a long and difficult hike to look at the distant old Armenian capital, Ani, which now falls within Turkish territory. The road was under repair, since the roads had been destroyed by the earthquake. We arrived at the Turkish border, where there is a 4 km wide neutral territory between two fences guarded by the armies of each side. After a long conversation with the border guards, we received authorization to go accompanied by a guard to a point 2 km past the fence, from where we could see Ani.
Na volta avistamos uma estátua ao longe - Armênia e nos aproximamos para ver, nisto nos surpreendemos com uma festa de casamento, da qual fomos convidados a participar. Tomamos conhaque em copos improvisados com embalagens de refrigerante e dançamos ao som do carro do irmão da noiva.
On the way back we saw a statue in the distance – Armenia, and we went to take a closer look. We came upon a wedding feast, where we were welcomed. We had some cognac in improvised glasses made of plastic soda bottles and we danced to the sound coming from the car that belonged to the bride’s brother.

On August, 11, we went to the ethnographic museum to prepare the space where we would display the Lake Sevan findings.
