Leaving for the capital of Armenia on August 2, 2006, we could see Mount Ararak upon our arrival in Yerevan.   

Armênia carrega uma vasta história de perdas de seu território, atualmente sua extensão é de 29.800 Km² (equivale ao estado do Pará). Chegando ao aeroporto de Yerevan às 23 horas, após aproximadamente 23 horas de viagem, partimos direto para o Lago Sevan.

Armenia has a long history of territorial losses. Nowadays, its landmass covers about 29.800 Km² ((equivalent to the state of Pará in Brasil). After traveling for about 23 hours, we arrived at the Yerevan airport at 11:00 P.M.  We left immediately for Lake Sevan.

Chegamos ao ponto de encontro, no Lago Sevan, por volta da uma hora da madrugada do dia 3 de agosto, o local estava um breu, mesmo com a lua cheia.

We arrived at Lake Sevanat  about 1:00 A.M. on August 3. The place was very dark, even with a full moon.

Ficamos hospedados em um alojamento às margens do Lago Sevan –“Pensão dos Físicos”. Logo ao entrar me surpreendo com as paredes construídas com pedras rosadas: fósseis petrificados cravejado de conchas marinhas.

We stayed in a small hotel on the shores of Lake Sevan, the “Hostel of the Physicists”. As we entered the hotel, I was surprised by its walls, which were built of a pink stone, encrusted with petrified fossils of marine shells.

O local serve como uma colônia de férias no lago, porém, mais parece um reformatório russo, com precárias instalações, isolado de qualquer comércio ou cidade, sem TV, telefone e internet.

The place operates as a summer camp by the lake, but it seems more like a Russian reformatory than a summer camp, with its precarious installations, isolated from any commercial center or town, and no TV, telephone or Internet.

No dia seguinte, 4 de agosto, encontramos o primeiro grupo no café da manhã que era servido às nove horas e apresentava um cardápio peculiar e uma organização enigmática.

The next day, August 4, we met the group for breakfast at nine o’clock in the morning.  Breakfast was strange and the organization was enigmatic, at best.

A falta de café preto no cardápio causou angústia em alguns do grupo que partiram em busca de algum local que servisse café. Disseram-nos que havia uma lanchonete em um povoado há uns quinze minutos contornando a estrada à direita. ‘Alguma civilização’, pensamos.

The lack of black coffee drove some in the group to go looking in town for a place that served coffee.  We were told that there was a snack shop in a village about fifteen minutes down the road to the right.  ‘At last, civilization,’ we thought.

Quinze minutos depois, encontramos um local com algumas construções e galpões de ferro... Para nossa surpresa era o local indicado. Serviam café armênio e fomos introduzidos à tradição de leitura da borra do café por Marlyne, uma das organizadoras da expedição.

Fifteen minutes later, we came upon a place with some buildings and steel sheds...We were surprised to discover that this was the place we had been told about.  We were served Armenian coffee and Marlyne, one of the expedition organizers, introduced us to the local tradition of reading the future in the coffee-grounds at the bottom of our cups.

Depois das leituras nos dirigimos para pagar e mais uma surpresa: a senhora usa um ábaco para fazer as contas!

After the readings we had another surprise when we went to pay: the woman cashier used an abacus to prepare the bill!

Na volta ao nosso alojamento, nos encontramos com os armênios da equipe que chegaram pela manhã e nos chamaram para conhecer o lago Sevan.

Back at our lodgings, we met the Armenians who had arrived that morning to join the team and they took us to go see Lake Sevan.

Caminhamos entre os pinheiros e chegamos ao lago.

We walked through pine trees to arrive at the lake.

A sensação era a de ter chegado ao oceano, tão longa a extensão do lago Sevan.

We felt like we had arrived at the ocean, the lake was so big.

Depois de conhecermos uns aos outros, conversarmos sobre as descobertas recentes pelo grupo que estava acampado em outra margem do lago (e com quem nos reuniríamos futuramente) e planejarmos nosso trabalho, usufruímos um final de dia de lazer.

After we had been introduced to each other and had talked about the recent discoveries made by the group on the other side of the lake (with whom we would meet in the next few days), we made plans for our work and then relaxed and  enjoyed the rest of the day.

Até o por do sol, por volta das 23 horas, ficamos na margem do lago conversando, provando petiscos típicos: lavach (pão folha) recheado de queijo de cabra, carne seca, tomate, pepino e ervas (salsinha, cebolinha e manjericão); e bebendo vodka.

We stayed at the lake’s edge until sunset, which was not until almost 11 P.M., talking, trying regional appetizers--- lavach ( a kind of very thin bread) stuffed with goat cheese, jerky, tomatoes, cucumber and herbs---and drinking vodka.

No dia seguinte, saímos para pesquisas de campo em locais que abrigam importantes monumentos históricos em torno do lago Sevan. A Armênia é o primeiro país a adotar a religião católica na Eurásia, no ano 201 d.C.

The next day, we went to do field research at the places where there are important historical monuments around Lake Sevan. Armenia was the first country in Eurasia to adopt Catholicism, in the year 201 A.D.
